Ranges and Location
Directions
Outdoor
range, walled garden, Down Grange.
Assuming that you know the area reasonably well, come along Pack Lane
from Brighton Hill Roundabout, (you go past Halfords and Homebase) and
follow the road until you see the playing fields on your left hand side.
You will see a turning on the left, take this and follow the road right
around the running track and Hockey pitch. Eventually you will come
into a car park and on one side is a large brick wall. Set into the
wall are a pair of wrought iron double gates. Go though these and follow
the path until you see a gate with a red metal flag. These are our grounds.
Follow the walkway through the small opening in the yew hedge and you
will come to the firing point. PLEASE DON'T go round by the paving slabs
as this will bring you directly onto the range. There is no vehicular
access from the Winchester road via the Toby Carvery/Health Club entrance
This map
points to the car park.
Popham
woods
Open competitions such as the Summer Sizzler and
Easter Bunny Bash are usually held at Popham Woods. This map shows the
approximate location but please read the directions below as well.
The Grid Ref for a 1:25000 landranger series map is SU 544444 GB.
From Basingstoke on M3
Take the A303 turning at junction 8 towards Andover. After aprox. 1
mile you will see a service station/Little Chef ahead on the left hand
side of the dual carriageway. You are now roughly parallel with the
venue which is off the other carriageway. Continue down A303 until you
come to a slip road, take this slip road which is sign posted to Micheldever
Station and Feed Mill to T junction and turn right so that you go underneath
the A303. Turn immediately right again so that you are going back on
yourself and go past the entrance to Popham airfield, continuing up
road until you rejoin main carriageway heading back towards the M3.
Go past service station / Little Chef on this side of carriage way and
as you go past, you will start to go down a gentle hill. Start slowing
down. After about1/4 mile there is a lay-by, turn into this and go through
the gate into the car park and venue.
From M3 south
Go up to junction 7 and come off on slip road. Go back over M3 on bridge
and come back on yourself staying in the left hand lane. Filter off
left on A303 slip road towards Andover and follow instructions as above.
From A34
Join A303 at Bullington Cross and head towards Basingstoke & London.
After you pass the slip road to Micheldever Station, look out for Popham
Airfield and service station on your left. Go past service station /Little
Chef on this side of carriage way and as you go past you will start
to go down a gentle hill. Start slowing down. After about1/4 mile there
is a lay-by, turn into this and go through the gate into the car park
and venue.
Indoor
range, East Oakley village hall
The indoor range is at East Oakley village hall which is on Hill road
in East Oakley RG23 7LH
This map
shows the area.
Our Ranges
We currently have four ranges to shoot at, The Walled Garden, East Oakley
Village Hall, Popham Woods and The Rat House. Each has a unique element
to offer.
The
Walled Garden
The Walled Garden is our longest established grounds and can be found
off Pack Lane, Kempshott. It is part of a traditional country house
walled garden and offers a 30 yard and 55 yard range with the 30 yard
covered with a roof.
This is our general grounds and all of the disciplines can be shot here,
from plinking to FT and Pistol to HFT.
The grounds are open on club days which are Sunday mornings from 09.00
to mid-day and during May to End August on Tuesday evenings between
07.00pm and 09.00pm.
Members who have a key can use the grounds at anytime during daylight
hours and although key issue is limited due to the number of keys the
council provide, access can often be arranged at other times for non-key-holding
members.
There are no extra charges to use the Walled Garden as this is included
for all members.
East
Oakley Village Hall
This is our 10m dedicated target range for both 10m pistol and rifle
disciplines. Currently free of additional charge, this may have to change
with a range fee added to bring the range into line with our other two
ranges. A decision will be made in early September 2011 to decide if
a small charge will be applied and will be based on the numbers using
this range.
Range times are Tuesday evenings from Sept to end May between 07.00pm
and 09.00pm. Members using this range generally take part in one or
more of the NSRA winter postal leagues.
The atmosphere at this range is generally a little more reserved and
quiet as the concentration to shoot 10m demands a higher level of concentration.
That said, you will find our “indoor Section” a very friendly and we
lcoming bunch!
Popham
Woods
Popham Woods have been associated with BARPC for many years as the grounds
we hold our open and winter HFT league competitions at. Situated just
off the A303 near the airfield, they are one of the best wooded shooting
grounds in the South and provide an environment for creative HFT and
FT courses to be set, whether in the depths of winter or the “hot” days
of Summer although its generally accepted that late spring when the
woods are covered in a carpet of bluebells is the most stunning time.
It is here you will find shooters from near and far coming along to
take part in “The Easter Bunny Bash” and “Summer Sizzler” events. The
EBB (formally the “Nockover Classic”) has been held here since the early
1990’s.
We now use the Woods on a more regular basis with a monthly Sunday morning
“meet” for practice and club leagues. This take place between 09.00
and 12.30 as advertised via email and this website although we do advise
confirming a date before attending as dates can be subject to change
due to weather etc.
A small charge is made per head to help towards hire costs.
The
“Rat House”
This is a new and very welcome venue for us. Located just outside Basingstoke
and not far from both East Oakley and Popham, this is a full 60 yard
long indoor range where we can shoot full legal limit rifles (and pistols
if desired) out to the full FT 55yard competition distance. Predominately
a practice/plinking range we do have a limited external area we can
use as well depending on weather and time of year.
One popular feature here is the opportunity to shoot 25m bench rifle
with a couple of our members organising weekly competitions.
During winter, localised heating is available making this a truly all
weather range. Again there is a small range fee payable (£1) which also
includes tea and coffee and an area to congregate for a chat and discuss
shooting topics etc.
Location details are provided to members when joining the club.
